Tips on Treating Urinary tract Infections

This recent question in our newsletter received a lot of helpful answers! Please read below for more info on natural ways to treat UTIs. Kitchen Crafts 'n' More doesn't recommend any treatment - please see your doctor for any health treatment.

Lorraine says:
Please let the person who asked about Cranberry Juice for UTIs know that you can buy Cranberry in pill form. I used to get about 10 UTIs per year. Now, I take one Cranberry in the A.M and one in the P.M. and I "maybe" have ONE a year now - I've been taking them for over 8 years!!! It works great and I would highly recommend them! They can be purchased at most major department and warehouse stores!!

Cariad says:
PREVENTING UTIs -- Yes, cranberry juice works, but you want to get the 100% juice variety. Stay away from the stuff with sugar, corn syrup or artificial sweeteners -- that stuff feeds the infection. Raspberry juice also supports good urinary tract function, so cran-raspberry is also very effective. When you have a UTI, drink loads of water, cranberry juice (remember, no sweeteners), and herb teas (again, no sweeteners). Basically, steer clear of sweets until the infection is gone.

A great way to prevent uti's is to drink a small glass of undiluted and unsugared 100%cranberry juice (R.W. Knudsen's Just Cranberry is great). It helps prevent bacteria from growing in your urinary track. Another one that works great is straight pomegranite juice. Also try to cut down on soda and sugars, drinking plenty of water. Hope this helps!

In response to UTI's: Cranberry juice does help. Try not to get the juice cocktail but the pure stuff. Drink a glass or two a day depending on how bad your infection is. As far as prevention goes, you can run by your local GNC and pick up some cranberry pills. Take one a day to maintain a healthy UT. Also drink plenty of water. I have had these for over 30 years and they truly are a pain. If they get to the point where you can't stand it you may need to see a doctor. Also there is an OTC medicine that helps with the pain and frequent urination problems. Check out your local drug store.

You bet that Cranberry juice works, quicker than anything else! The Cranberry Pill works pretty good too. To prevent UTIs, always be sure to wipe from front to back, if you pull the other way, you pull fecal matter into your urinary tract.

Sylvia says:
Regarding the question about URI (urinary tract infections), I have heard that eating yogurt helps with them. From occurring and also to help in treatment.

Lisa says:
I used to get UTI's all the time and I wholeheartedly recommend cranberry juice. Be sure it's pure and not the juice cocktail as it has high fructose corn syrup in it. Kroger has CranberryApple blend under their label. If you can't find any with no added sugar try a health food store. They have Cranberry juice concentrate; it'll tell you on the bottle the ratio to water. Also, drink plenty of water and lay off the sugars as much as possible until it's cleared! Cranberry juice is pretty bitter by itself so I think it only comes mixed with other juices. Hope you get well soon. They (UTI) are not fun.

Tell her to see a female Urologist. And, yes, cranberry juice does help, as long as it has NO added sugar. Good luck (1) finding a juice that has no added sugar and (2) drinking craberry juice without added sugar. I decided to see a woman Urologist, who cleared me up in no time.
