How to Clean Moldy Carpets
Sent in by a reader
Question:
How can I clean my carpet that got wet and moldy due
to a leak?
Deborah suggests:
"I used to be a manager for a cheese store
chain. We used buckets of vinegar water to
soak the knives and cleaning rags in between uses.
The acid in the vinegar keeps you from spreading
mold from one cheese to the other during trimming
and to prevent some weird strains of "bleu cheddar"
after cutting a bleu cheese for a customer ;-)
Vinegar is also a good deodorant so you might
try spraying the carpet with vinegar then making
SURE it is thoroughly dry (fans and space heaters
maybe?). The underlying floor will have to be
thoroughly dry and disinfected as well or it will
just keep coming back. You might use household
bleach for the underflooring. "
